Tip: European patterns state yardage in meters, American ones in yards - a 100 g skein of "400 m" and one of "437 yds" are the same amount of yarn.

Calculate a Yarn Substitution
Yarn Substitution calculator computing how many skeins of substitute yarn are needed

Yarn Substitution answers the classic question: "the pattern calls for 8 skeins of yarn X - how many skeins of yarn Y do I need?" Enter the original yarn's skein count and length per skein, then your substitute's length per skein. The calculator works from total yardage - not weight - divides by the substitute's yardage per skein, and rounds up.

Tip: Yardage is the honest measure for substitution - two 50 g skeins can hold very different lengths depending on fiber and spin. Always compare lengths, then double-check the gauge matches too.
