23I want to plan my color palette
Browse ready-made palettes, plan your colourwork, and see how a yarn will pool
- Tools → Design Tools → Color Palette, and Tools → Calculators for yarn pooling.
- Both are hidden in Simple View. Switch to See Everything first.
- Nothing to switch on, and no Ravelry account needed.
Go to Tools → Design Tools → Color Palette. Look through the ready-made palettes and pick the one that suits you. That is your personal colour type, and colour choices across the app then start from colours that flatter you.
There are 12 seasonal colour-analysis palettes, grouped by season: True, Light and Clear Spring; True, Light and Soft Summer; True, Soft and Deep Autumn; True, Clear and Dark Winter. They are built around what suits your own colouring, not around a mood. Each one shows its swatches with names and tags for their character.
Tap any palette to see the whole set of colours, each with its colour code and a short description. Pick the one that matches what you have in mind, and take it with you when you shop for yarn.
Every palette lays its colours out as a grid of swatches, so you can see how the tones sit together. Tags such as Clear, Warm or Bright describe the character. Open a palette and it also names its colour combinations, its best neutrals, and the colours to avoid. That last one is the useful one when a yarn sale is tempting you.
Go to Tools → Calculators → Yarn Pooling Calculator. It shows you how the colours of a self-striping or variegated yarn will pool. Enter one colour of the repeat at a time, and say how many stitches it runs for. Your yarn is remembered for next time.
Tell it four things: the order of the colours in your yarn, your technique (knitting, or crochet in moss stitch, single crochet or double crochet), whether you work flat or in the round, and the range of stitch counts to try. Every stitch count in that range is drawn as its own swatch, in number order, so you can compare them with your own eyes. Best first reorders them by the pattern they make. A target style filter narrows them to argyle, plaid or stripes. Each swatch names what it found.
