58I want the app to look the way I like

40 themes, six surface styles, light and dark, atmosphere - and a wizard if you would rather be asked

Before you start
1
Let the App Ask You First

If you would rather not scroll 40 themes, the colour theme screen offers Choose your look: four questions - light or dark, the mood you want, how much contrast you need, and then the theme. It ends on four presets: Minimal & Quiet, Cozy & Crafty (the recommended one), Clear & Readable, and Bold & Playful. Apply Style sets the theme, the surface style and the contrast together.

Tip: Dismissed the card with Not now? Bring it back with Show Style Guide Card in Settings → Appearance.
2
Pick a Theme
Colour theme screen showing the Appearance, Applies to, Surface and Theme atmosphere selectors above the theme families

There are 40 themes, grouped into families - Minimal & Line, Vibrant & Rainbow, Soft & Cozy and more - so you can find the kind of thing you like before comparing individual ones. Each swatch shows its accent colours and whether it uses a border or a soft glow. A fresh install starts on Citrus Burst, marked Recommended.

Tip: Every theme is hand-authored in both light and dark. They are not one palette dimmed - the dark version is its own set of decisions.
3
Light, Dark, and Which Gets Which Theme

Appearance decides the mode you are in now: Auto (follow the device), Light or Dark.

Beside it, Applies to decides which mode the theme you pick is saved for: Both, or only Light, or only Dark. That is how you run one theme by day and another at night - set Applies to Light and choose your daytime theme, then set it to Dark and choose the other. With Appearance on Auto, the app then changes with your device.

4
Choose How Solid It Looks

Surface is separate from colour: it decides how much the app fills in behind tiles, cards and buttons. Six options - Default, Minimal, Pure, Light, Regular, Bold. Minimal and Pure are the quiet ones (Minimal even puts the icons away); Regular and Bold paint the accent colour in properly. New installs start on Light.

Worth knowing
Theme vs surface
The theme is which colours. The surface is how much of them you see. A theme that felt too loud is often the right theme at a quieter surface.
Enhanced Contrast
Under Appearance. Swaps the text and border colours for a stronger authored set and gives every card a visible edge, in every theme and surface style. For bright sunlight, or low vision.
Icon Style
Basic (system icons), Stash2Go (hand-drawn craft icons) or Ravelry. Changes the home tiles and the navigation bar.
5
Add an Atmosphere

Theme atmosphere is a beta: turn it on in Settings → Appearance → Beta Features and an Atmosphere control appears on the colour theme screen. Each of the 40 themes has its own authored scene, drawn quietly behind the app. Off, Still, or Drift - which lets it move very slowly.

The rest of Appearance - home layouts, badges, behaviour - is in Customize the Look and Customize Your Home Screen.
