28I want to use the app offline
Download your projects, stash and patterns before you go, and keep knitting where there is no signal
- Downloading needs the phone or tablet app. The browser has nowhere to store it, so at app.stash2go.com you can change the settings but not download.
- Tools → Offline, and a connection while you download - the whole point is to have your things later, when you do not.
Go to Tools → Offline. The top of the screen tells you straight away whether you are ready to go: a Ready or Not Ready badge, the total size of what is stored, and a Why not ready list naming exactly which projects or stash entries have not been downloaded yet. Nothing is downloaded automatically, so the first time you open this screen it will say Not Ready.
Tap What gets downloaded. Each kind of content - projects, stash, photos, patterns, library, queue, favorites, bundles - has its own switch, so you can take your projects to the cabin without dragging your whole stash along. For each one you choose All or By type.
Choosing By type reveals the status chips. For projects: In Progress, Finished, Hibernating, Frogged. For stash: Active, Used Up, Will Trade/Sell, Gone/Sold, and handspun still in progress. Most people want in-progress projects and active stash and nothing else, which is a fraction of the size.
Tap Download now. A progress line names what it is fetching and counts through the items, and the readiness badge at the top flips to Ready when it finishes. Do this on WiFi the first time - photos are the bulk of it. You can come back and tap it again whenever you have added projects since.
The Data cards show what is actually stored, with a size and an item count each: Patterns, Raw Data (projects, stash, needles, queue, favorites, bundles, messages) and PDFs. Tap a card and you get the items themselves, with their own search box - so you can check before you leave that the pattern you meant to bring is really in the bag. Delete downloaded data clears the lot if you need the space back.
Under Advanced, Test offline mode makes the app behave as though there were no connection, while your connection is in fact fine. It is the only way to find out what your bag actually contains before you are on the train. Turn it on, walk through the screens you expect to use, then turn it off again.
The Offline capabilities section at the bottom is the honest list. Available offline: everything you downloaded, to read. Editable offline: your row counters, and selected PDF and project changes - these are held on the phone and sync back to Ravelry the moment you have a connection again. Not available offline: searching, and anything else that has to ask Ravelry a fresh question. So count your rows at the cabin all week; the counts will be waiting to go up when you get back into signal.
